Error Code 4 on a Pedal Electric Bike

If you own a Pedal Electric AWDII electric bike, there is a chance you can experience a sudden loss of power!

I cannot be certain what all scenarios will look like, but for me, I was on a steep hill at a stop-light waiting to turn left. When the light turned green, I gave the bike some throttle and started to move through the intersection when all of a sudden I realized the bike was no longer responding to throttle. I tried pedaling, but didn’t get any “assist”. That left me to manually pedal the bike through the busy intersection and pull over.

Once I pulled over, I noted the bike still had battery and was turned on. I tried to pedal again and got a throttle response for 1–2 seconds before it died again. I tried cycling the power and noticed that error code 4 flashed across the screen of the King Meter for a second or two.

After a few more attempts of experiencing only 1–2I manually pedaled the bike for a short distance to a more out-of-the-way spot where I could safely analyze the bike.

On the spot, I tried googling the error code with various terms around king meter, ebike, pedal electric AWD, etc, but didn’t really get any useful results…. shocker!

After giving up on the internet being helpful, I unlocked the battery and fully took it out, waited for ~30 seconds, and then slid it back in and locked it in place.

After that, I was able to get a consistent throttle response (at least for a few miles before it happened again).

After it happened that day, it hasn’t happened again. My guess is it had something to do with starting out on a steep hill and the bike getting confused with all the torque it was being asked for.

I emailed Pedal Electric about it and they said the error code relates to an issue with the throttle.

Here is their response:

Thanks for reaching out! Sorry to hear that you’re having a problem with your bike! This error you're seeing indicates a problem with your throttle.- Please check if there's any visual damage on the throttle or a cable cut.
- Twist the throttle and make sure when released it comes back to the original position.
- Remove the seat
- Check if the throttle connection is damaged, also unplug and plug it back in
Test to see if this fixes the issue
If not resolved, please include all photos and information on your bike, in your follow-up response.

Ultimately, I didn’t need to do any of those things, and the bike kind of fixed itself, but I appreciated their response.

If you are experiencing other issues with your Pedal Bike, I highly recommend this semi-official Pedal Electric tech support YouTube channel.
